Lord Mayor, Robert Doyle, recently proposed a new law to ban people sleeping rough in the city.
This proposal will not work to fix homelessness and poverty.
Since 2012, the number of rough sleepers in Melbourne has more than doubled.
Meanwhile, the 33,000 Victorians are languishing on the public housing waiting list, with many waiting 10+ years for housing.
To the Melbourne City Council: simply 'banning' people from sleeping rough won't work.
We need to focus on real solutions to keep people from sleeping on the streets, including:
- More long-term affordable housing and more public housing,
- Accessible health services, and
- Properly resourced support services.
