FIX THE WASTE AND RECYCLING CRISIS
‘Building a world-leading recycling industry right here in Victoria would create jobs while protecting our rivers, oceans and sea life.’
After years of government inaction Victoria now faces a waste crisis. Recycling is being stockpiled, or worse: dumped in landfill.
With relentless campaigning, we’ve made progress in revolutionising waste and recycling in Victoria.
We’ve secured a ban on plastic bags, a 10 cent refund on bottles and cans by 2023, and a separate glass recycling bin for households from 2021.
But there is still more to be done.
My plan would build a local industry, creating local jobs and leading Australia in the transformation of waste. It includes:
- Building a world-class plastic recycling plant here in Victoria
- Phasing out unnecessary single-use plastics, like plastic on fruit and veggies
- Allowing everyone to put their food scraps in their green bins, so they’re turned into compost
- Setting strong targets for the use of recycled materials in roads and other infrastructure
- Funding projects that create a reusable culture
- Stopping toxic waste incinerators, which harm our health and create pollution and toxic ash
